Sir Derek Roberts Prize

The Sir Derek Roberts Prizes are awarded to first year undergraduate students in the UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering based on their ‘knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to bioprocessing’.

Sir Derek Roberts, CBE, FRS, FREng (28 March 1932 – 17 February 2021) was an engineer who twice served as Provost of University College London (UCL), firstly from 1989 to 1999 and later from 2002 to 2003. He oversaw a considerable expansion of UCL during his first period as Provost and personally supported the creation of the first UK Department of Biochemical Engineering at UCL in 1998. His professional career was spent as a director of research in a number of leading international companies. His Knighthood was awarded in 1995 for ‘services to engineering and education’. The main UCL Faculty of Engineering building, the Roberts Building on Torrington Place, is named after him.

Applications are open to all degree students in UCL Biochemical Engineering. Up to 4 awards of £1000 are awarded annually. To be considered for an award, applicants must complete a form and provide an up to date one-page Curriculum Vitae including the name of their Personal Tutor who will act as a referee. Up to 8 shortlisted candidates will then be invited for interview. Prize winners will normally be announced at a departmental Team Briefing.

Full details of the process, including the deadline, dates for interview and the application form will be shared with students after enrolment.
