Cell Culture and Analysis UCL RESILIENCE MBI course launched
20 January 2025
The ‘Cell Culture and Analysis’ UCL RESILIENCE hands-on laboratory MBI course was successfully launched last week (14 - 16 Jan 2025) at the UCL East Marshgate Campus in the Cell Culture Suite

The hands-on laboratory MBIs are designed to provide industry-relevant skills, and it was obvious that this is what drew delegates to the Cell Culture and Analysis MBI during introductions at the outset of the course. The delegates had backgrounds in chemistry, biotechnology (bacterial fermentation), and yeast cell biology, and they all indicated that this was an ideal course to enable entry into the advanced therapy manufacturing sector.
The hands-on MBI was well-received, with delegates commenting that the preparatory classroom lectures delivered on day 1 were ‘very engaging’ and the subsequent laboratory sessions were ‘intuitive’. In the laboratory, the delegates worked to apply defined standard operating procedures (SOPs) for conventional mammalian cell culture, analysis of cell activity using metabolic assays, and identification of cell phenotype using immunocytochemistry. They were able to perform this work to generate cell proliferation and immunofluorescence staining data that they were all excited to analyse.
The delegates worked with tutors and collaboratively with each other to navigate the SOPs. Their camaraderie throughout the short course, which was encouraged with group work sessions, created a cohesive team from the beginning of the hands-on MBI. We delivered interactive tutorials that included datasets to analyse, and we discussed and demonstrated various approaches that could be taken to analyse the cell images they had generated, including Python, MATLAB, and ImageJ plugins. Delegates were able to take away data sets they had generated in the lab for further analysis, and we ensured that they were provided with the information required to interrogate those results. RESILIENCE hands-on training is an ongoing service so they will be able to contact us with any questions regarding the SOPs that they were guided through in the laboratory.
The MBI ended with industry talks delivered by Dr James Kusena (MFX) about cell manufacturing and Dr Nicola Bevan (Sartorius) about the analysis of cell function, which garnered significant interest and provoked lively discussions.
