A warm welcome to to the 2021 Crook Committee

17 May 2021

Say hello to the new UCL Biochemical Engineering undergraduate events committee, from left top left across Aditi, Lewis, Agnes, bottom left Jorge, Pamela, and Fatin

Members of the 2021 UCL Biochemical Engineering Crook Society

We took a few minutes for a teams call with the new members of the undergraduate events committee, named after Professor Eric Crook, a founding member of the discipline of Biochemical Engineering at UCL.

Lewis Crowley, President

“I’m studying the Biochemical Engineering MEng, entering year 2 in September 2021. I come from Oxfordshire, UK and I took A levels in mathematics, chemistry, and english literature.I want to engineer real life Pokémon and create houses you can plant and grow! Beyond my passion for bioengineering, this degree incorporates all of the major STEM subjects and, as such, means I can be as nerdy as possible about as much as possible!

I'm looking forward to playing an active role in creating / being part of the fantastic community of people we have both inside the department and at UCL as a whole!”

Aditi Holey, Vice President

“My A Levels were in Chemistry, Physics, Maths Further Maths. I’m studying a BEng in Engineering (Biochemical) and I’m in Year 2.

It is always amusing to explain how I ended up at Biochemical Engineering at UCL. Long story short, it happened quickly. I think the deciding factor was realising how versatile the degree would be. It incorporated all aspects of science (physics, chemistry, biology, maths and coding, which I loved!) and applied it in an astounding variety of ways. Pharmaceuticals, food & beverages, textiles, genetic engineering, regenerative medicine, and bioenergy are just some I can name from the top of my head. It really enables us to create a significant impact on the health and sustainability of the future.

Since last year was entirely online, I am really excited to return to in-person events - especially during Christmas, hopefully we will meet then!”

Jorge Abad Jordan, Treasurer

“I did my A-levels in  Maths, Further maths, Biology, Economics and Spanish before joining the BEng Biochemical Engineering.”

It lies at the interface of many different fields. I have always had very broad scientific interests, I enjoy the opportunity to have such a multidisciplinary education. Indeed, this is one of the few, if not the only, course that enabled to further explore my incessant curiosity.

This year what I am looking forward to the most is the opportunity to get as much social interaction and in-campus experiences as possible. In relation to my specific role within the committee, I look forward to learning how to best manage our budget and optimise the logistics of all events as much as possible.

Agnes Julia L. Aparte, Social Media & Marketing Secretary

“In in my second year of a BEng Biochemical Engineering Program and for my A-Levels I took Biology, Chemistry and Maths.

I wanted to study this degree as I was curious about the specific process in which certain therapeutics were produced. I also did an individual research project on stem cell therapy during my last summer of A-level. This initiated my interest in the field and I knew that Biochemical Engineering degree can be utilised in stem cell research. I am now taking the Regenerative Medicine minor, in which I apply the technical knowledge from Biochemical Engineering to learn more about stem cell development and production. I have been enjoying it so far!

I look forward to engaging with all students to promote various events (career talks, socials, and etc.) so that they will know more about the opportunities available to them outside of their degree and that they can make the most out of it.  Even though social media is our main platform, I want to help students in forming a connection with fellow students and the staff, and raise awareness in what is going on within the department or within the university.”

Pamela Emanuelle Ishak, Events Secretary

“I’m studying the BSc Bioprocessing of New Medicines (Science and Engineering) and I did my International baccalaureate (IB) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Why did I choose this programme? Because it's science and innovation in one package! I'm super excited to finally host in-person events this year (if all goes to plan!).

I can't wait to meet people, especially the people in the department who I've yet to meet.”

Fatin Abdul Fata, General Secretary

“I studied in Qatar and did the A Levels in Maths, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics before joining the MEng Biochemical Engineering.

I'm indecisive and I enjoyed all my A levels. I couldn't choose which to do at uni, and then found this course which is a mix of all the 4! It's such a diverse field.

I'm excited to welcome the new cohort and get to know my way around our little community at the department. It's going to be a lot of fun interacting with all the students and staff through Crook's events!”
