MSc Biochemical Engineering
MSc Biochemical Engineering
Have you ever wondered how the latest life science discoveries (like a new antibiotic molecule or a novel stem cell therapy) can move from the lab into commercial scale production? Have you ever wondered whether it is possible to produce bio-polymers (plastics) and biofuels from municipal or agricultural waste? Dreaming of a career in the Pharma or Biotech industries? If so, then the Biochemical Engineering MSc is the right degree for you!
Biochemical engineers translate exciting discoveries in life sciences into practical materials and processes contributing to human health and wellbeing. The potential impact is huge, as findings could mean the creation of new medicines, cell based therapies or environmentally friendly "green" chemicals (biofuels, biopolymers, specialty chemicals). At each stage the biochemical engineer is required to link knowledge of biological science with fundamental engineering principles. This could be to create new routes of manufacture, transformative technologies or clinical processes. It is a challenging process as not all methods are affordable – sometimes, entirely new biochemical knowledge is required.
MSc BioIntegrated Design
Bio-Integrated MSc (BioID) is a new interdisciplinary Master's hosted by The Bartlett School of Architecture, and is run co-jointly with the Department of Biochemical Engineering. The programme takes an experimental approach to use advances in life and material science to create innovative environments that are integrated with natural and synthetic living form.
The two–year programme structure of the BioID is studio and laboratory based. During this time you will merge a wide range of techniques: employing laboratory testing in biotechnology and synthetic biology, using novel design as a research tool to encompass high-end computation and fabrication, and creation of multifunctional and bioreceptive materials.
Bio-Integrated Design MSc emphasises autonomous and highly original experimental work. It is suitable for students with an engineering, mathematical or scientific background. Experience with biotechnology gained through iGEM or biohacking activities is warmly welcomed.
