Entry requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree, or a UK Master's degree, in life or physical sciences or engineering, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Relevant industrial experience can also be considered.

Only students in receipt of UKRI funding through the Centre for Doctoral Training in Bioprocess Engineering Leadership (Complex Biological Products Manufacture) will be admitted to this course. We are unable to consider self-funded and externally funded applicants for a place on this programme.

Fees and funding

All students on the EngD course are funded by the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Bioprocess Engineering Leadership (Complex Biological Products Manufacture) (EP/S021868/1). These 4-year studentships cover UCL fees, the minimum UKRI stipend (estimated £ 17,983 for the 2022/23 academic year), project consumables and training costs. An additional industrial top-up is provided by the company partner of each project (£2,800 for Year 1. Top-up payments are subject to agreement with and payment by the partner).
Funding is available for Home, EU and International applicants, with limited availability for the latter categories.

Application Process

All candidates wishing to be considered for a place on the course must submit a formal application through the UCL Application portal for the DDNBENSBIL01 EngD Biochemical Engineering and Bioprocess Leadership programme. It is recommended to apply early as most funded projects will be filled before the formal application deadline.

All EngD projects are funded by the EPSRC CDT in Bioprocess Engineering Leadership and are pre-set by the department and the industry partner. As and when EngD projects are confirmed, project supervisors will review existing applications and advertise their project on the departmental website. Candidates are welcome to submit their application without a specific project in mind or can apply for specific projects advertised on the departmental website. Candidates who already submitted their formal application for the course are encouraged to keep an eye on the above page for funded opportunities and send their CVs directly to the supervisors as well if projects of interest arise.

Note: Applicants’ diversity data will be reported to UKRI. The data is aggregated before reporting and will not be linked to individual applicants.

Interviews

Interviews will be arranged by the project supervisors following shortlisting, as and when projects are confirmed and likely will be held online via Microsoft Teams. Shortlisted candidates will receive further information from the supervisors.
