Teaching and Training Activities

Suzanne’s current teaching activities include guiding both Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology students in their 3rd year Bioprocess Plant Design Project which involves the complete design of a bioprocess plant for the production of biotech products arising out of life science discoveries. She has driven the creation of a new research-led teaching course, Bioprocess Systems Engineering, which exposes Master’s level students to the department’s cutting-edge research in Decisional Tools.  Suzanne’s earlier teaching roles include co-ordination of the following core process engineering courses to undergraduate and MSc students: Fluid Flow & Mixing in Bioprocesses, Heat & Mass Transfer in Bioprocesses and Computer-Aided Bioprocess Engineering. 

Suzanne also co-ordinates the department's MBI® training module on Quality by Design for Effective Bioprocess Characterisation and Validation which forms part of the departments continual professional development (CPD) offering. She teaches on several other MBI® training modules on economic aspects of mammalian cell processes, cell therapy cost of goods analysis, single-use process economics, R&D portfolio decisions and approaches to accelerating bioprocess development.

Suzanne Farid is Professor of Bioprocess Systems Engineering at the Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering at University College London (UCL). She is Co-Director of the EPSRC-funded Future Targeted Healthcare Manufacturing Hub in collaboration with industrial and academic consortia to revolutionise the delivery of cost-effective stratified protein-based and personalised cell-based therapies to patients.  She is also Director of the UCL-MedImmune Centre of Excellence on predictive multivariate decision-support tools for mammalian cell manufacturing processes. Previously she was Co-Director of the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Emergent Macromolecular Therapies

She leads research on novel software-based ‘Bioprocess Decisional Tools’ to plan the best route to manufacture of new biotherapeutic candidates. More specifically, she has pioneered the design of novel algorithms at the process-business interface to facilitate cost-effective bioprocess design, capacity planning, and R&D portfolio management through to predictive tools for root cause analysis and manufacturability assessments.

These tools have been applied to strategic decisions in the development and manufacture of protein biopharmaceuticals such as monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and of cell and gene therapies (e.g. MSCs, CAR T-cells). Examples include batch versus continuous manufacture, in-house versus contract manufacturing decisions, factory floor scheduling, centralised versus decentralised manufacture of personalised therapies, facility fit prediction and root cause analysis of deviations in critical quality attributes (CQAs). 

Funding for the above research has come from the UK EPSRC and BBSRC Research Councils, Innovate UK (previously the TSB Technology Programme) and a range of company collaborators including Medimmune, GSK, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Bayer, Lonza Biologics, and Pall Life Sciences. In addition the Future Targeted Healthcare Manufacturing Hub is supported by a User Steering Committee of over 35 industrial users and sector organisations.
