Professor Stefan Rokem Joins UCL Biochemical Engineering For Six Months

Please welcome Professor Stefan Rokem, who joins The Department from the the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, where he is a member of the faculty of the Medical School, Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics.

UCL Biochemical Engineering's Professor Nicolas Szita writes: "Stefan and I know each other from my own days at DTU, when Stefan was a visiting professor there with Jens Nielsen in the BioCentrum-DTU in Denmark.

Stefan gave an exciting seminar on biofuels about a year ago in our department, and he has published over 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He has also written two books on the Biology of Methylotrophs and on Biotechnology & Environment. Furthermore, he is the editor on the book volumes of the UNESCO series on Biotechnology which lately has been discontinued."

Prof. Rokem has been teaching the following courses at the Hebrew University.

  • Applied Microbiology, 3rd year B.Sc. course. The basics of the use of biologicl entities for the benefit of humanity. Including both general technics used in applied microbiology and description of processes of industrial importance.
  • Industrial Microbiology, Graduate course (M.Sc. and Ph.D. students). The biology behind the use of organisms for use in industrial processes. The course covers the following subject areas.
  • Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences, Graduate course (M.Sc. and Ph.D. students). The use of biotechnology to monitor, clean up and novel processes to augment sustainable development.
