Dr Stefanie Frank Joins The Department of Biochemical Engineering at UCL

18 January 2017

We at The Department of Biochemical Engineering are very pleased to have Stefanie Frank join the team. Stefanie grew up in Germany and graduated from the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena. In 2001, she came to the UK to work as a research technician in the group of Prof David Becker (UCL) where she helped to develop a wound-healing drug.

Stefanie moved on to do a PhD in Biochemistry under the supervision of Prof Martin Warren (QMUL) elucidating the Vitamin B12 biosynthetic pathway. During her postdoctoral years (University of Kent) she became interested in the engineering of bacterial microcompartments for potential biotechnology applications. Stefanie was awarded a prestigious Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship in 2013 which allowed her to spend the next few years developing microcompartment-derived tools for this purpose.

“As a new lecturer in Synthetic Biology I will work on the design and industrial application of enzyme localisation technologies with the aim to synthesise bio-therapeutic proteins and small molecule drugs. My contribution to teaching will be in the areas of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology.”
