BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities
BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities, a charity established by the mining company BHP Billiton, is the founding contributor to UCL ISR.
From 2011 - 2016, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities provided UCL ISR with US $5 million over a 5-year period to support academic research, fellowships and scholarships, as well as the appointment of a new Chair in Sustainable Global Resources.
The use of the funding and the role of the Chair was at the sole discretion of the UCL ISR. The Institute reserves the right to pursue any area of research it deems worthy of investigation and remains free to publish the results of any research projects it undertakes.
Much global expertise in resource use and how that can be made sustainable rests with the companies whose business is the extraction, processing or use of natural resources. So it’s important for UCL ISR to build strong mutually beneficial relationships with these businesses.
UCL ISR has a strict policy of engagement with industry and any related funding.
