The Bartlett Promise aims to enable students from backgrounds which are underrepresented in The Bartlett, to pursue postgraduate studies at The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment.
For The Bartlett Promise scholarship candidates must:
- be UK domiciled with home fee status or be a forced migrant² (as defined by UCL) in the UK
- have an offer of admission to a Bartlett master’s course for study in 2025-26 and must not have completed a master’s (including integrated master’s degrees or degrees sometimes known as ‘undergraduate master’s) or PhD at UCL or anywhere else previously.
In addition to these, for The Bartlett Promise - Aziz Foundation scholarship candidates must:
- identify as a British Muslim and/or
- work to support British Muslim communities
Candidates must also meet at least one of the additional criteria:
- be in financial need as assessed by UCL³
- be from a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic background⁴
- be from a Gypsy, Roma or Traveller community⁵
- have a disability⁵
- be a care leaver⁵
- have care responsibilities
- be first generation in family to attend university at undergraduate level
- be first generation in family to attend university at postgraduate level

- Choose a Bartlett School and a master’s course which you want to study - Once you know the time frame that you have, you must identify the master’s course that you want to study. Our nine schools other a wide range of master’s courses in the built environment. You can search for a course by school or by looking at the Bartlett Faculty master’s courses.
- Check the entry criteria for your master’s course - Make sure that you understand the entry criteria for the course you have chosen and are likely to meet them. All the entry requirements are on the course webpages. Read these carefully before you apply and gather all the supporting documentation you need to upload for your application.
- Apply for your chosen master’s course - When you have confirmed the course that you want to study click on the Apply Now button to make your application.
- Wait for an offer of admission from your school - Candidates for a Bartlett Promise Master’s Scholarship can only be considered if they have secured an offer of admission to a Bartlett master’s course. You will be asked to submit your UCL offer of admission letter when you apply to The Bartlett Promise.
- Apply to The Bartlett Promise Master’s Scholarship - Once you have an offer of admission to a Bartlett master’s course you can apply for The Bartlett Promise Master’s Scholarship. The application form will be open from 1 March 2025 to 31 May 2025 at 23.45 BST.

You must meet The Bartlett’s academic requirements. You must apply for admission to a Bartlett master’s course. When you do this, your academic abilities will be assessed by the department that you have applied to. You must have received an offer of admission from one of The Bartlett schools to study a master’s course in 2025-26 by 31 May 2025 (the deadline for your Bartlett Promise application submission). The Bartlett Promise team will not assess your academic ability further. You must first identify an appropriate master’s course to study. Our nine schools offer a wide range of master’s courses in the built environment. You can search for a course by school or by looking at the courses available or using the course finder. When you have found a suitable course, click on the Apply Now button on the course page to make your application. Please note: MEng (Engineering and Architectural design) and MSci Architecture (ARB Part 1 & 2) are classified as an undergraduate courses so applicants should apply to The Bartlett Promise Undergraduate scheme to study these courses.
Applications to Bartlett master’s courses opened on 18 October 2024. We strongly advise you to apply early. To apply for The Bartlett Master’s Scholarship, you must have received an offer of admission to a Bartlett master’s course by 31 May 2025. UCL aims to make a decision on applications within 6 weeks of receiving your completed application, academic transcripts and both references. However, please note it can take three to four months when application volumes are high. You are strongly recommended to apply early; a 6 week turn around cannot be guaranteed.
Your UK domiciled and home fee status will be assessed by the admissions teams and your offer letter will state what you fee status is.
The Bartlett Promise – Aziz Foundation Scholarship
The Bartlett Promise works with donor organisations to increase the number of scholarships we are able to offer. The Aziz Foundation funds tuition fees for master’s scholarships for British Muslim students and/or those who work to support British Muslim communities. They look for scholars who are dedicated to:
- Effective Advocacy and Enhancing Public Perception – facilitating better representation and contribution of Muslims to civil society to combat Islamophobia and positively transform perceptions of British Muslims
- Community Service and Social Development – raising the aspirations and standards within British Muslim communities
Together, we offer The Bartlett Promise Scholarship supported by the Aziz Foundation (also known as The Bartlett Promise – Aziz Foundation scholarship). This award has the same value and conditions as The Bartlett Promise scholarship but you must meet the Aziz Foundation criteria to be considered.
Yes. By answering the Aziz Foundation questions in the application form (questions 22-24), you will be considered for both The Bartlett Promise - Aziz Foundation scholarship, for which you must meet the specified criteria, and The Bartlett Promise scholarship.
Yes. You will join a community of Aziz Foundation scholars in addition to being part of The Bartlett Promise community. The Aziz Foundation will help you develop your leadership skills by providing you with seminars, workshops and opportunities to build your networks.
Yes. If you are awarded The Bartlett Promise – Aziz Foundation scholarship you will be asked to:
- Provide a bio to be uploaded to the Aziz Foundation website
- Attend the Aziz Foundation scholars’ induction day in September
- Provide two progress reports each academic year to show that you are making good progress with your course
- Engage with the online platforms run by the Aziz Foundation
- Spend the equivalent of two weeks volunteering during the year. This could consist of working with British Muslim community and civil society organisations, participating in outreach activities through formal widening participation schemes, facilitated by UCL, or undertaking informal outreach work on one’s own initiative such as giving a talk to a local secondary school.
No. The Aziz Foundation will sponsor all master’s courses at The Bartlett.
Candidates applying for a master’s scholarship from The Bartlett Promise must have received an offer of admission from one of The Bartlett schools to study a master’s course in 2025-26. This guarantees your academic merit. You do not need to have accepted the offer in order to apply to The Bartlett Promise. Please note: MEng (Engineering and Architectural design) and MSci Architecture (ARB Part 1 & 2) are classified as an undergraduate courses so applicants should apply to The Bartlett Promise Undergraduate scheme to study these courses.
No. If you have an unconditional offer, you have met all the requirements to join the course. If you have a conditional offer, your admission offer letter will specify the conditions you need to meet for entry to the course (e.g., you may need to achieve a 2.1 grade in your undergraduate course). If a shortlisted candidate has a conditional offer, they will need to confirm that they have met the conditions required by 4 June 2025 so that they can be considered for an award.
Once you have received an offer of admission from a Bartlett school for a master’s course to start in September 2025, you can submit your application for The Bartlett Promise Master’s Scholarship. The application form will be available from 1 March 2025. Candidates must complete their application by 31 May 2025, 23.45 BST. We will consider your educational, personal and financial circumstances. You will need to demonstrate these in your application form. You will be asked email a copy of your offer of admission letter to Bartlett.promise@ucl.ac.uk by 31 May 2025 to be considered for shortlisting. (Please check your spam folder regularly – emails in relation to the scholarship will come from Bartlett.promise@ucl.ac.uk or s.rolph@ucl.ac.uk).
Candidates who are shortlisted will be asked to engage in a one-to-one dialogue with the Windsor Fellowship to discuss anything which you feel might support your scholarship application. This will not include describing or detailing your academic abilities. For The Bartlett Promise – Aziz Foundation scholarships, a representative of the Aziz Foundation will participate in the dialogue. The dialogues will be conducted electronically via an appropriate method agreed between the Windsor Fellowship and the applicant e.g. telephone, Zoom etc. They will be scheduled by the Windsor Fellowship 11 to 27 June 2025.

You will be asked to email a copy of your offer of admission letter to bartlett.promise@ucl.ac.uk by 31 May 2025 to be considered for shortlisting. If you are awarded a scholarship and your offer letter is conditional, you must submit an unconditional offer letter by 4 June 2025 or the award will be withdrawn. (You can download your offer letters from the UCL portal).

If you return to your family home outside of term time, then you must include your parents’ income as you are part of their household even if physically living away from it while being a student.
The successful applicants will be notified by email by 18 July 2025.
As part of The Bartlett Promise, we will provide tailored support services to award holders throughout the life of their programme and career support beyond. We will achieve this by bringing in expertise from across UCL to create appropriate packages of support for individual scholars. In addition to this, you will be joining The Bartlett Promise Community of current and previous scholars, benefactors, supporters and friends. This community will support you during your studies and forms a network to guide and sustain you throughout your career.
You can also find a wealth of support for your wellbeing from UCL student services and from the Student Union.
The scholarship covers fees and a maintenance allowance to allow for full-time study. If you have personal circumstances which would make full-time study very difficult (eg caring responsibilities or a disability), your personal circumstances will be taken into consideration and you may be considered for a part-time study award. For part-time study, part-time fees and a pro rata stipend will be paid.
The Bartlett Promise covers fees and a maintenance allowance to allow scholars to study full time. Scholars must complete their course within the expected duration of their course. If your circumstances change significantly and changing to part-time study is necessary, it may be possible to keep your Bartlett Promise scholarship but this is not guaranteed. Please discuss with the Promise Team before making any decisions.
Working part time is permitted but scholars should discuss this with their supervisor and ensure that this is not detrimental to their studies. The award is for the expected length of the course.
The maintenance allowance is £15,864 per year.
The fees will be paid directly by The Bartlett Promise to UCL fees. The maintenance allowance will be paid to you in three instalments (October, January and April).
There is no additional funding to cover relocation.
This scholarship is for UK domiciled students with home fee status only. Any Bartlett Promise scholarships for international students will have a separate application process. Please check our website for updates.
No, the scholarship offer cannot be deferred. You must take up your place in September 2025. If you are not able to take up a scholarship in 2025, you can apply again in the following year.
The award may be held in conjunction with other scholarships or bursaries, as long as the total value of all your scholarships and bursaries (including The Bartlett Promise) does not exceed the stipend rate set by UKRI which is currently £20,622. This figure may change in the future in line with any changes to course fees and average living costs in London. You must inform The Bartlett Promise team if you hold awards other than The Bartlett Promise or The Bartlett Promise - Aziz Foundation scholarship.
There is no additional funding for field trips.

The Aziz Foundation works to support British Muslims to bring positive change to their communities and beyond by sponsoring students to pursue postgraduate courses. The Aziz Foundation has supported four British Muslims in partnership with The Bartlett Promise in the last 4 years and will fully fund the fees for up to three British Muslims and/or those who work to support British Muslim communities as part of The Bartlett Promise scholarship programme.
