Mary Rose: Assessment of Environmental Risks during Display

Background & Summary of Project

My research investigates emissions from waterlogged archaeological wood and the consequences of these emissions during display.  With a focus on acetic acid emissions, I perform in and ex-situ off gas monitoring from wooden artefacts in the Mary Rose collection. From this data, we hope to improve guidelines regarding display of archaeological wood. In addition, to enable efficient and accurate monitoring of acetic acid, this project aims to develop a real time acetic acid sensor suitable for use inside display cases. This will enable future research into the effects of acetic acid inside museums.
