  • About us

Our role

UCL BERN’s external engagement role is to coordinate our extensive technical knowledge of the building envelope into a coherent and comprehensive research programme that will:

  • promote interdisciplinary research into all aspects of the building envelope
  • promote collaboration between UCL researchers, and with researchers in other UK universities and established stakeholder groups
  • help respond to the needs of Governement and the building industry.

Our vision

Our vision is to enable, connect, engage and inspire people living and working in all types of buildings; in particular, those working on improvements to the building envelope.

What is the building envelope?

The building envelope (i.e. a building’s ground or basement floors, external walls, roofs, windows and external doors) defines the boundaries between interior and exterior, and interfaces with other buildings.
