About the Project

Of London’s 32 boroughs, Camden has amongst the highest level of income inequality and poverty. As the impacts of COVID-19 began to emerge in the spring of 2020, Camden chose to respond with a bold approach for transformation.

The Camden Renewal Commission was launched to kick start this process of transformative renewal in the fall of 2020. The Renewal Commission is co-chaired by leader of the Council Georgia Gould and IIPP Director Professor Mariana Mazzucato, and supported by sixteen commissioners that represented key organisations across the local community. Over the course of nine months, the Renewal Commission developed four concrete missions for Camden:

  • By 2030, those holding positions of power in Camden are as diverse as our community - and the next generation is ready to follow;
  • By 2025, every young person has access to economic opportunity that enables them to be safe and secure;
  • By 2030, everyone eats well every day with nutritious, affordable, sustainable food;
  • By 2030, Camden’s estates and their neighbourhoods are healthy and sustainable.

As these missions were being developed in Camden, the Mayor of London and Greater London Authority subsequently adopted missions as part of the London Recovery Programme which seeks to oversee long-term economic and social recovery, reshaping a fairer, more equal, green, resilient city than existed before the pandemic.

IIPP has continued to engage with Camden and its missions. With funding UCL’s HEIF Knowledge Exchange & Innovation Fund programme, IIPP is supporting the delivery of the missions and learning from Camden’s implementation approach through a series of knowledge exchange workshops with the Council and its key stakeholders. IIPP will also work with Camden as a ‘Policy Lab’ supported through a new partnership with the Laudes Foundation. The Policy Lab will enable IIPP researchers to engage Camden’s team of policy designers through a process of ‘practice-based theorising’.
