The Royal Bank of Scotland’s Group Facilities and Logistics division (GFL) supported the creation of a Workplace Innovation Centre (WIC) at UCL. The purpose of the centre is to use intellectual and knowledge management concepts to provide, develop and support an innovation based approach to RBS’s workplace solutions. To date the business cases based on efficiency and cost have achieved good results, but a knowledge based approach is expected to deliver more fundamental changes in terms of effectiveness of resource use and value to the service provision.

Therefore, the intellectual and knowledge management concepts will be used to address new and current business needs and to improve and consolidate service delivery through a series of pilot projects. The goals of these pilot projects are to remove the physical constraints for business development and to reduce costs of service delivery while increasing the service reliability. The expected benefits of these pilot projects are revenue increases through the support of new initiatives and an improved cost to income ratio of the current service provision. The benefit for GFL is to be seen to be an industry leader in innovative workplace service solutions. The benefit to RBS is enhanced market value by innovation at three levels: owning its customers; securing new market opportunities; and delivering new workplace services.
