The overall aims of this project are to establish the ventilation rates achieved in modern secondary schools in England or Wales built in compliance with DfES Building Bulletin 93 and to produce design guidance to assist architects and engineers to optimise the provision of ventilation in schools. These twin objectives have allowed us to obtain a snapshot of current performance in a small number of case studies and to develop design guidance for future schools.

Nine recently completed schools were monitored in detail for their indoor air quality, thermal comfort and acoustic performance all of which are affected by the ventilation systems. To derive the design guidance the results from the measurements in the schools have been used and then generalized using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In this way, we aim to achieve a detailed understanding of the interaction between ventilation air and heat sources in naturally ventilated school classrooms.
