Edited by writer and Bartlett alum Jeremy Melvin, the 100-page publication – which includes chapters titled Ideas, Design Through Research, History and Alumni – is a review of the school’s 175-year history of teaching architecture at UCL.

'This celebratory publication aims to highlight the exceptional diversity, creativity and innovation that are currently active at the school, and how they have accelerated over the past 30 years in particular.' – Prof Bob Sheil, Director of The Bartlett School of Architecture

Opening with imagery from student projects showcasing advances in digital and image-making technology, the supplement then goes on to outline new approaches to teaching at The Bartlett, namely research-based education. The focus then turns to history, highlighting key moments in the school’s evolution before looking to the future, highlighting new forms of practice to emerge from the school.

'It has been a privilege and a pleasure to highlight the fascinating history of the school, and to be reminded of The Bartlett’s continuing reach and huge influence on architects and architecture.' – Christine Murray, Editor-in-Chief of the AR

The ‘175’ supplement will be circulated with the May edition of AR and will be available on the AR website from 25 April 2016. The publication is one of a series of activities to mark the school’s 175th anniversary, which dates back to 1841 when Thomas Leverton Donaldson was appointed UCL’s first Chair in Architecture, one of the first in the UK, founding what later became The Bartlett School of Architecture.
