This module will provide students with a critical perspective on 'grand challenges' affecting Western Capitalism and introduce them to new approaches to economics and policy.
Capitalism is in crisis, ranging from the climate and ecological emergencies, to widening inequality and rising cost of living to financial instability. This module will provide students with a critical perspective on these ‘grand challenges’ and introduce them to new approaches to economics and policy which challenge standard thinking. The module features globally leading economists and policy makers. Previous and current lecturers include Mariana Mazzucato, Ha Joon Change, Stephanie Kelton, Jayati Ghosh, Kate Raworth and Andy Haldane.
The module will help students develop their critical thinking to make the connections between economic theory and real-world policy issues. It will include a range of different economic perspectives, including Neoclassical, post-Keynesian, ecological, evolutionary, and Marxist and institutional economics theories and how their different assumptions link to different public policies.
Rethinking Capitalism module is taught in Term Two and is available to all postgraduate students at UCL who have some social science background. We will also make available up to 20 places for policy makers to also take the course in a non-assessed capacity.
