SEA Reflective Space for Mexican and Brazilian Economists
The Strategic Economic Alliance (SEA) recently convened on March 31st, 2025 for a reflective space for Mexican and Brazilian Economists.
On Monday 31st March 2025, SEA convened a closed-door reflective space with Mariana Mazzucato, Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at the University College London and Founding Director of the UCL Insitute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), Gabriela Podcamdeni, Advisor to the Ministry of Enviroment of Brazil and Professor of the Federal Institute of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Gabriela Dutrénit Professor and Researcher at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Mexico, and Marcela Chapa, Project Manager for SEA.
This reflective space brought together Mexican and Brazilian economists and policymakers to align strategies ahead of COP30. The group focused on how industrial policy, public finance, and trade rules can be reoriented to support fair and ambitious climate action. They shared concrete policy priorities—such as expanding green industrial strategies, improving access to concessional finance, and reforming trade rules that currently penalize climate-related investments. These discussions helped clarify common positions and set the stage for coordinated engagement in global negotiations. The insights from this exchange will inform joint advocacy and technical collaboration in the lead-up to COP30 in Belém.
Together, the group began developing a shared agenda to influence global economic governance in ways that accelerate green transitions. They emphasized the need to strengthen national implementation capacity by investing in public institutions, improving planning tools, and scaling effective policy instruments. Rather than focusing solely on barriers, the space emphasized actionable solutions—highlighting how states can govern and shape markets to drive sustainable development.
