IIPP delivered an exclusive Executive education master class to the National School of Government in South Africa to mark the end of a month long course. IIPP Director Mariana Mazzucato  delivered the session on ‘The entrepreneurial state and mission economy: lessons and opportunities for South Africa’ to high profile government officials including Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa since 2018 and President of the African National Congress (ANC) since 2017.

During the master class President Ramaphosa outlined the South African government’s commitment to  an economic reform that would benefit all citizens and described a move away from outsourcing, which had weakened the state’s financial capabilities.

This comes as a result of the lessons learnt from Professor Mariana Mazzucato. President Ramaphosa said of her latest book and lectures, “she offers us a global perspective on a wide range of issues and how we should navigate challenges in a practical way.”

The master class was delivered as part of an executive education programme for The National School of Government (NSG) South Africa and South Africa’s Government Officials. IIPP’s Executive Education programme is a custom programme tailored to groups experienced practitioners, equipping leaders to co-design growth that is innovation-led, sustainable and inclusive.

Busani Ngcaweni, Principal of the NSG said of the programme:

This partnership for training and development unfolds in the context of people-to-people exchanges with leading institutions in the global South and the global North. The blended virtual programme will advance participants’ understanding of the role of the state in driving inclusive and sustainable growth; critically apprising global models of development and governance and taking pragmatic action to addressing core challenges of governance and government reforms.
