MPA fieldwork

At the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), we centre revived notions of public value and public purpose in our teaching, research and policy practice. Our work equips leaders to co-design growth that is innovation-led, sustainable, and inclusive.

In 2020, IIPP launched its closed custom executive education programme, welcoming groups of experienced practitioners from around the globe to work with our faculty. There is no equivalent custom programme that combines our ambitious approaches to policy making and a focus on structural change and innovation.

IIPP brings to executive programmes a track record of global policy impact, leading thinkers on innovation and governance, and a global network of mission-oriented organisations; by taking part in our executive education programmes, students become part of the IIPP movement!

Programme design

UCL IIPP is changing how public value is imagined, practiced and evaluated to tackle societal challenges. We are a world-leading institute, creating impact and inspiring policy development on all levels.

Public sector organisations play a pivotal role in global economies and political systems. Our Executive Education portfolio reflects this notion in every aspect. Modules are created to equip senior leaders and government representatives with skills and insights to co-design growth that is innovation-led, sustainable and inclusive.

Our modules are based on our four pillars: rethinking value, shaping innovation, transforming institutions and directing finance. Designed to offer strategic perspectives beyond organisational frontiers, they engage with the following topics

  • organisational change
  • dynamic capabilities
  • creative bureaucracies
  • systems thinking
  • specialised content around artificial intelligence, digital transformation and green finance.

To become part of this mission, please have a look at our Executive Education module portfolio for individual & group participation (/// make into link to section 2).

Please contact us directly for a conversation about options for creating customised programmes, tailored to your organisation’s background, challenges and development goals.

Module portfolio

Our modules are designed to cater to specific requirements of senior leaders and decision-makers. This is reflected in content design and mode of delivery by convening two distinct module categories. Each module is convened across a period of 5-7 working days.

Leadership-oriented modules provide and allow participants to develop and reflect on broad, intersectoral perspectives. We recommend these modules for senior-level visionaries that would like to engage with likeminded representatives across various sectors and develop new expert networks beyond their organisation.

Specialist modules are designed to offer case-based deep dives for expert practitioners in specific fields such as artificial intelligence, health innovation and green finance. Academic content is complemented with significant contributions by senior-level experts, offering additional insights and relevance.

Please contact us to discuss which modules may be most suitable for your specific needs and professional development aspirations.

Within the period spring & summer 2022 we offer the following modules (convened virtually):

  • - M1 - Creative Bureaucracies & Dynamic Capabilities (leadership-oriented, Mon 25 April – Fri 29 April 2022)
  • - M2 – Creating Impact with Systems Thinking (leadership-oriented, Mon 23 May – Fri 27 May 2022)
  • - M3 – Industrial Strategy (specialist, Wed 6 July – Wed 13 July 2022)

General information

All modules comprise of approx. 24 contact hours, including

  • high-level lectures
  • interactive seminars and break-out sessions
  • strong focus on external, expert practitioner contributions.

In addition, modules also require approx. 10 hours of asynchronous learning. Preparatory readings will also be provided.

Upon successful completion you will receive a UCL IIPP Certificate of Participation outlining the details of your modules and are invited to join our international alumni network.

Facilitators

We work with IIPP senior academics, IIPP PhD researchers as well as with contributors from our broad alumni- and senior practitioner network to create engaging and relevant content.

When designing our Executive Education programmes, we collaborate closely with practitioners from public sector organisations such as the United Nations, City Councils, Bank of England and government advisors. This enables us to convene programmes that offer a balanced level of academic depth as well as practical insight and relevance.

In terms of updates, the main things I had were that Rowan is chasing Rainer and Mariana (and Sarah) to sign of the IIPP Studio blog (which we want to publish ASAP), and Rainer has also  been in touch about publishing a blog from Erik Reinart (a visiting professor at IIPP) which I am now editing. Obviously we also published the blog from Josh and Stefan this week. I will update the comms calendar accordingly.

This partnership for training and development unfolds in the context of people-to-people exchanges with leading institutions in the global South and the global North. The blended virtual programme will advance participants’ understanding of the role of the state in driving inclusive and sustainable growth; critically apprising global models of development and governance and taking pragmatic action to addressing core challenges of governance and government reforms.“
