MOIN Global Gathering - Green Missions

The Mission-Oriented Innovation Network's Global Gathering will be a 3-day online event series, which following on from COP26 and its urgent mandate, will be dedicated to the theme of mission-oriented policy to tackle the climate crisis.  This Green Missions series will look at topics ranging from an analysis of COP26 and what this means for mission-oriented policy; through to exploring and highlighting the highly critical roles of both finance and design in driving the transition. This event series will crowd in insights from policymakers and actors globally who are implementing a mission-oriented approach.

Mission Momentum

Tuesday 8 February | 10:30 - 11:30am GMT

The critical need to address the climate crisis is taking centre stage globally and is demanding that policymakers provide visionary leadership and galvanise cross-sectoral and cross-actor investment and innovation.  Mission-oriented policy has the potential to enable coordinated solutions across all societal actors to tackle the crisis and, with public purpose core to the approach, advocates for a just, green transition. In this online event and using last year’s G20 and COP26 meetings as a backdrop, Prof. Mariana Mazzucato will speak to actors who are currently deploying a missions approach to tackle the climate crisis. Mariana will be joined by Clara de la Torre, Mission Manager for the Adaptation to Climate Change mission at the European Union and Dr Alex Cooke, General Manager for the Missions Programme within CSIRO, Australia’s National Science Agency.

Design for inclusive, just and green missions

The last century saw the role of design in society grow from enabler of industrialization and mass production to drivers of digital services, but with the climate crisis upon us, now is the time to widen the design discourse to take on the grand, complex challenges we face today. But how do we do that? If design at its best is “making things better on purpose”, then it surely has a vital role to play in creating green and just transitions. But this is not simply a question of reorienting existing design tools towards missions and big global challenges. When we design for and with a diverse range of people working toward common goals, the design process necessarily becomes more complex. So what must design do to adapt to mission-oriented thinking? In this session, Rowan Conway, Associate Professor of Strategic Design at IIPP will host a conversation with three leading design thinkers from around the world: Dr. Lesley-Ann Noel, Director of Undergraduate Programs, Design Studies, North Carolina State University; Christian Bason, CEO Danish Design Centre; and Dan Hill, Director of Strategic Design at Vinnova in Sweden. Together they will examine the power and potential of design for shaping inclusive, just and green missions and share their insights on how to broaden our understanding of “design thinking” to create wider value for generations to come.

Place-based green missions

Wednesday 9 February | 3:00 - 4:30pm GMT

Mission-oriented policy is being designed in the context of place to address the climate crisis.  In this online event, we will hear from members of IIPP’s Mission-Oriented Innovation Network who are deploying the approach.  At a city level, we will hear how the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), Valencia City Council and Camden Council (London) have implemented a mission-oriented policy and how they have structured their programmes; describing the tools being used, their successes and learnings to date. We are delighted also to welcome speakers from the South African government and NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) to provide a wider global context on the approach.

Beyond 4.0

Thursday 10 February | 10:30 - 11:30am GMT

It is commonly said that we are in a ‘fourth industrial revolution’ and policy is therefore formulated around the influential notion of ‘Industry 4.0’, referring to the digital transformation of production, related industries and value creation processes.  In this session, Professor Carlota Perez, Honorary Professor at IIPP, discusses her research for the EU Funded ‘Beyond 4.0’ project and looks at the different ‘mission-orientations’ taken by governments during previous transitions, countering technological determinism with an argument for the powerful role of both state and society in determining a trajectory for the diffusion of each revolution. Her aim is to help MOIN members unpick the narrative of technological transition, and provide a broader criteria than the ‘Industry 4.0’ shorthand for shaping politics and policy making.

Redirecting finance for a just, green transition

Thursday 10 February | 3:30 - 4:30pm GMT

With the current financial sector being at the heart of the climate crisis, how the system will be overhauled to enable a green transition that is just and equitable is an important issue.  The work of IIPP has advocated for public green investment banks, which across the world are already the pioneers of green lending.  In this session, IIPP Policy Fellow Katie Kedward will moderate a discussion on this topic between IIPP founding director Prof. Mariana Mazzucato and public banking sectors experts- Shiva Dustdar (Head of Division at the European Investment Bank’s Innovation Finance Advisory), Dan Adler (Senior Advisor for Climate Finance at the Californian Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank -IBank) and Jill Earthy (CEO INBc Investment Corp, British Columbia).
