Sustainability of Land Use and Transport in Outer Neighbourhoods (SOLUTIONS)

Overview

Sustainability of Land Use and Transport in Outer Neighbourhoods (SOLUTIONS)

Funded by the EPSRC / University of Cambridge | 2005 - 2006

The SOLUTIONS project is concerned with the overarching question of how far, and by what means, can towns and cities be planned so they are socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable and economically efficient. The particular focus of the SOLUTIONS project is on spatial policy (in terms of design of land use dispositions, transport system configurations and built forms) in outer city areas that are experiencing, or are likely to experience, growth.

The research involves a number of in-depth case studies, carried out in partnership with local planning authorities and other stakeholders, which will systematically test the effectiveness of alternative designs and development strategies for structuring and restructuring outer urban areas. It is expected that the project will deliver a set of recommendations for national and local policy makers, and private and public sector agents for achieving sustainable urban environments.

The project is led by University of Cambridge, in collaboration with the University of the West of England, University of Leeds, University of Newcastle and Institute of Community Studies. The overall project ran for four years (April 2004-March 2008). Within this, the Bartlett School of Planning collaborated with the SOLUTIONS partners in connection with the London case study, which included the Thames Gateway area.

"It is increasingly being recognised that the outer cities are not an aberrational form, or an extension of, the old core-periphery model. Rather, outer cities represent a new organisational model. " - Palen. J. J. (1995) The Suburbs, NY: McGraw- Hill.

"Labour has produced urban white papers and rural white papers. The time is surely now ripe for a suburban white paper too." - The Guardian, Editorial, 26.04.04.
