Planning and Politics of Edge City Retrofit

Planning and Politics of Edge City Retrofit was funded by the British Academy.

Overview

This research will examine the planning and politics surrounding the redevelopment and proposed redevelopment of the so-called edge cities of Kendall-Dadeland, Tysons Corner and Schaumburg in the United States. These are considered as prime examples of edge cities where there is considered to be some potential to increase the density and sustainability of low-density suburban business and residential centres.

The cases offer insight into the prospects for re-planning and retrofitting the large tracts of suburbia that dominate US city-regions. These edge cities represent some of the most fertile ground for innovative planning approaches given they are relatively compact nodes within the wider suburban fabric. The planning and political challenges and obstacles to retrofit give a flavour of the enormity of the task facing local governments in shaping more sustainable urban forms for the future.
