Professor of Planning receives first prize for outstanding international impact

14 June 2013

Prof. Fulong Wu

Fulong Wu, Professor of Planning at The Bartlett, was awarded first prize in the Outstanding International Impact category by The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) on 14 May. He received a trophy along with £10,000 to promote the economic and social impact of research.

Professor Wu’s research has explored a socially sustainable form of urbanisation and the integration of rural migrants in urban China. Speaking following the award he said, “generating international impact has been made possible thanks to our collaboration with policy users and partners in the process of doing research. I am very pleased to know our efforts have been rewarded and I see this as a step towards realising The Bartlett’s China mission.”

Fulong Wu has been Professor of Planning at The Bartlett since September 2011, having previously taught at Cardiff and Southampton universities and is among the top 50 most cited human geographers in the world according to Social Science Citation Index (SSCI,‘h-index’). As part of his research, he works closely with Chinese academics, policy makers and planning professionals to help China achieve a sustainable urban future.

The ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize is a new, annual initiative which rewards the successes of ESRC-funded researchers, divided in six categories, who have achieved, or are currently achieving, outstanding economic and/or societal impacts. Applicants were judged by a panel of experts from business, academia and the public sector.

The shortlisted researchers were invited to attend an interview with a user of their research, to further demonstrate to the panel their role in achieving outstanding research impact.
