Transport and City Planning MSc student, Fernanda Rivera, participated as a speaker at COP29 which was held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Fernanda Rivera, a Transport and City Planning MSc student at The Bartlett School of Planning, spoke virtually at “Unlocking Ambition for Transport: Next Leap Towards a Just and Equitable 1.5°C Future”. The event was held during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan and was part of a series of Global Climate Action events that mirror the thematic programme published by the Azerbaijan COP29 Presidency and organized by the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action (MPGCA).
The discussion showcased actions undertaken by a wide range of transport stakeholders in response to the COP28 First Global Stocktake, focusing on the following:
- Aligning transport sector and industry policies with just transition principles.
- Establishing clearer, more ambitious pathways for a breakthrough in Avoid and Shift transport.
- Showcasing resources developed by the transport community to support countries in scaling up the scope and ambition for transport in the next round of NDCs.
Fernanda who is a former General Director of Transport for Mexico City participated as a panellist on “Enhancing capacity to raise ambition for transport in NDC 3.0”, covering Mexico City's case of transport transformation.
Fernanda Rivera said: "It was an honour to participate at COP29. It was clear that public transport and popular transport have a main role in the Global South and are a vital pillar in fulfilling NDC commitments. Public transport is key to reducing emissions, enhancing resilience, and ensuring equitable climate action for all. This made me aware about the importance of my master's program to be aware of the role of cities and public transportation."
