15 August 2018

RTPI

BSP research features twice in the shortlist for the RTPI Research Excellence Awards for the Academic Award. Congratulations to both entries:

'Assessing the Impacts of Extending Permitted Development Rights to Office-to-Residential Change of Use in England'
Ben Clifford, Jessica Ferm, Nicola Livingstone and Patricia Canelas

It has been possible since May 2013 to convert a building from being an office into residential use without needing planning permission. This research assesses the impacts of extending permitted development rights for office to residential conversions in England. Utilising an in-depth case study approach, this research sought to determine whether enhanced freedom to change the use of property has threatened the development of sustainable communities through the loss of public revenue and unwelcome externalities.

Street Appeal: The Value of Street Improvements
Matthew Carmona, Tommaso Gabrieli, Robin Hickman, Terpsi Laopoulou and Nicola Livingstone

This is a fundamental change, and it is important to understand both the benefits and drawbacks that result. This research represents an attempt to capture and understand these impacts and to address the question, what is the ‘value’, in the widest sense of the word, of place-based improvements in street design.
