Matthew Carmona appointed Specialist Advisor to House of Lords Select Committee

House of Lords Select Committee on National Policy for the Built Environment

Professor Matthew Carmona has been appointed Specialist Advisor to the House of Lords Select Committee on National Policy for the Built Environment.

The committee, which is chaired by the Conservative peer Baroness O'Cathain, was appointed in June 2015 to consider the development and implementation of national policy for the built environment. Its wide remit encompasses, among many others, key areas such as urban design, planning and housing provision.

The committee is currently hearing oral evidence and is due to report by 23 March 2016. A call for written submissions will be published by the end of July 2015. Expert witnesses who have given evidence to the committee this month include:

  • Dr Richard Simmons, former Chief Executive of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE); Visiting Lecturer at the Bartlett School of Planning
  • Professor Mark Tewdwr-Jones, Professor of Town Planning, Newcastle University and formerly Professor of Spatial Planning and Governance at the Bartlett School of Planning
  • Steve Quartermain, Department for Communities and Local Government, Chief Planner
  • Ruth Stanier, Department for Communities and Local Government, Director of Planning
