Postgraduate offer holders

This page provides information to those who have received an offer to study a postgraduate programme commencing September 2023.

Please note that we do not provide online teaching. All students are expected to arrive in person by 25th September.

Induction week

Induction events for all new students will take place in the week commencing 25th September. The week is designed to help you settle into UCL life with opportunities to meet your programme's team, as well as your new colleagues. We will update this page and email you your programme's induction week timetable in good time before you arrive.

A note for part-time and modular/flexible students only

Although we encourage you to attend as many induction activities as possible, we understand that this may not be possible for part-time and modular/flexible students. If you are unable to attend all week, we suggest you aim to go to the following key events:

  • Induction meeting with programme Director and Administrator
  • Part-time Student Information Sessions
  • Friday Social Event

Information for non-UK students

To help make the transition into life in the UK and studying at UCL as smooth as possible, the International Student Support team has created orientation information for all non-UK students starting their studies at UCL. It is recommended that students from overseas attend their orientation course. For more information visit UCL's International Student Orientation Programme page.

Pre-enrolment and enrolment

How do I pre-enrol?

1. Accept your unconditional offer by returning the offer reply pro-forma to the college Admissions Office or by accepting the offer via the online admissions portal.

2. The Student Centre will send you an email inviting you to pre-enrol in mid/late August. The email will contain a user ID and a token, which you can use to set up your password by visiting the Online User Registration (OUR) service. Once you have pre-enrolled you will be able to:

  • check and update key personal information on your student record
  • enure that all details regarding your programme or course fees are correct
  • accept UCL's academic and financial regulations, plus the Data Protection statement
  • pay fees prior to your arrival or confirm any sponsorship arrangements

For more details visit the UCL Enrolment for New Students web page.

How do I enrol in person?

Once you have pre-enrolled you will receive an email with details of your face-to-face enrolment appointment.

What do I need to bring with me to enrol?

  • your offer letter
  • your student ID number (this is stated on your offer letter)
  • some means of paying your fees if you haven't already done so. If your fees are being paid by a third party please bring a letter from your sponsor with the contact name and address to be invoiced. Please bring confirmation from your funding body if you have been awarded a scholarship. You can find information about payment methods here.
  • evidence of having met the condition(s) stated in your offer letter (if not already supplied)
  • your passport (or your driving licence if you don’t have a passport, or birth certificate)
  • your student visa (if applicable)

You will then receive your student ID card and will be an official BSP student!

Module selection

You will be able to select your modules after you have pre-enrolled. The deadline for module selection will be confirmed closer to the time.

How do I access module selection?

You can access module selection via the 'My Studies' page on Portico. There is a link to the module selection task in the 'My Modules' container.

Where can I find information about modules?

The UCL Module Catalogue provides comprehensive information about all modules taught at UCL, including module content and assessment patterns. There will also be introductory videos available to watch on Moodle.

View the UCL Module catalogue.

You can find a list of your compulsory modules, possible elective modules and a structure diagram to show how these fit together on your programme page.

How do I know when I've been accepted on to a selected module?

You can check the approval status of your module selections in the 'My Modules' container of Portico. You will be notified via email when your selections are either approved or declined. If a selection is declined the email will include details of why this has happened – for example, the module may be full, or you may not meet the prerequisites for studying on the module.

Administrators will aim to approve your module selections as soon as is practically possible. There may be a short delay given the large number of students and the complexities of some of our programmes. If you have any queries or concerns, please contact your Programme Administrator directly.

Graphic Skills Portal

What is the Graphic Skills Portal?

View the Graphic Skills Portal and read more about it on the BSP website.

We are very excited to share with you the Bartlett School of Planning Graphic Skills Portal.

We are particularly aware that those of you who come from non-design backgrounds may not be familiar with graphic techniques and software and we want to ensure that you all have the best possible start and feel confident and able to engage with all aspects of your learning from the moment you begin your studies.

The Graphic Skills Portal is an easy-to-use free resource that presents in a clear and systematic way a set of step-by-step guides and tutorials aimed at supporting the development and learning of graphic skills at the Bartlett School of Planning. Before enrolling, you are encouraged to familiarise yourself with the Design Process & Techniques section of the Portal, a bespoke series of booklets introducing the 4 phases of design: Analysis, Visualisation, Design and Presentation. Trial versions of all software are available for free for a limited time. After enrolment, all software, including the Adobe CC will be available for free to current Bartlett students. In addition to the Portal, new and returning students will be able to enrol to the Graphic Skills Foundation Module, a non-credit-bearing taught module aimed at providing a practical guide to producing graphics for urban design and planning projects. We strongly recommend attending this course to students in the following programmes: MSc International Planning; MSc Spatial Planning; MSc Spatial Planning Degree Apprenticeship, MSc Sustainable Urbanism; MSc Urban Design & City Planning; MSc Urban Regeneration, and MPlan City Planning, especially if they have no graphics training, or feel they need to brush up on these skills.

For students who are unable to attend the live sessions, the recordings of all the presentations will be available on Moodle to watch at one’s own pace. The only pre-requisite is that students enrol on Moodle.

Course Representatives

What do Course Reps do and how do I volunteer?

As a Course Rep you would help gather thoughts and opinions from students on all things relating to your course. If there are changes to be made, you’ll be empowered to work with staff to make it happen. As a rep you will work with staff to:

  • represent student views

  • let staff know what students most enjoy

  • resolve any problems students are experiencing

  • improve the quality of education

Your Programme Administrator will give you an opportunity to express interest and put your name forward after you have joined us. More information will be provided on how to do this closer to the time.

Field trips

All of our Masters programmes usually include at least one field trip. Information usually provided for field trips is below:

What will I need to pay for?

UCL covers the cost of your travel and accommodation. You will need to pay for any meals and travel within the city. You may be liable for some or all of the cost of the trip if you cancel on short notice, unless on medical grounds.

What do I need to provide?

During induction week your Programme Administrator will request that you complete a form and upload a scanned copy of your passport via Moodle. Clear instructions will be sent closer to the time. You will also need to pay for the cost of a European visa, if required

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, you must make sure that you apply for UCL travel insurance in order to be fully covered while on field trips. This is paid for by UCL. The application process should take no longer than 5 minutes. Thorough instructions of how to do this will be provided on the Postgraduate Moodle page.

How do I apply for a visa?

If you require a visa, you will need to make an appointment with the relevant embassy. Let your Programme Administrator know once your appointment is confirmed so that they can then provide you with a supporting letter.
