*CANCELLED* The Practice, the Theory, and the Silence of Kindness in Planning

There’s a planning puzzle. We appeal to equity and justice, among other ends, explicitly and often. But what explains our silence about kindness? Kindness requires distinct judgments, not just good intentions. This leads to surprising conclusions about the role that silence plays.

John Forester is Professor of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University. His best known publications are Planning in the Face of Power (U. California, 1989) and Deliberative Practitioner (M.I.T.,1999). Forester has collected and written about planners’ practice-focused oral histories for many years. His recent publications include: Reimagining Planning: How Italian Urban Planners Are Changing Planning Practices (2018, with Daniela De Leo), Rebuilding Community After Katrina (2016, with Ken Reardon), and Conflict, Improvisation, Governance (2015, with David Laws). He continues to work on issues of improvisation, injustice and conflict in planning.
