The Development and Use of Design Codes in the UK was Funded by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) in 2004.
This project, led by Tibbalds Planning & Urban Design, encompassed a stocktake of the use and utility of design coding in the UK and overseas. The work has fed into an 18-month pilot programme exploring the role and value of design codes in greater depth.
Dr Quentin Stevens
This project led to the following publications:
Matthew Carmona and Jane Dann, Design Coding, Testing its Use in England, London, CABE, January 2005
Matthew Carmona, Stephen Marshall and Quentin Stevens, 'Design Codes, their Use and Potential', in Progress in Planning, Vol. 65, No. 4, 2006
This report led to the commissioning of a major 18-moth pilot programme by the UK government to fully test the use and utility of design coding to enhance design and development outcomes.
