Dr Daniel Ibañez is an architect, urbanist and scholar who serves as director of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and co-founder and principal of Urbanitree. His groundbreaking work focuses on the architectural and urban implications of renewable, carbon-storing biomaterials in construction – a field of critical importance as the built environment grapples with climate change.
Among his notable projects, Daniel is the lead architect of Terraces for Life, the tallest social housing mass timber building in Spain, and co-creator of the Mass is More installation at the iconic Mies van der Rohe pavilion. His research has been extensively published, including the influential book Wood Urbanism: From the Molecular to the Territorial (Actar, 2019), which explores how timber construction can reshape urban development from the smallest scale to the territorial level.
Beyond his architectural practice, Daniel serves as Senior Urban Consultant at the World Bank, where he advises international governments and institutions on biobased housing and urban development strategies. His academic career has taken him to prestigious institutions including the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Northeastern University and RISD. He has also served as an external examiner at The Bartlett, giving him valuable insight into the school's innovative pedagogical approach. He is visiting faculty at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, continuing his commitment to architectural education.
I’m honoured to open this year’s Summer Show at The Bartlett – a place where architecture remains unapologetically radical, experimental and hands-on. At a time when environmental urgency, spatial inequality and social justice can no longer be deferred, The Bartlett reaffirms its commitment to designing more just and ecologically powerful urban futures. I look forward to discovering how the work on display tackles approaches needed to reclaim complexity, reframe justice and reshape the future.
The Bartlett Summer Show 2025 private view and launch party take place on Thursday 26 June, where Daniel will address staff, students, friends and family at the prizegiving ceremony at Outernet London.
The exhibition will open to the public from Friday 27 June to Sunday 13 July, showcasing design projects from over 1,000 students from The Bartlett School of Architecture both on campus and online.
