About the project
Botanical gardens are places where people come to experience nature, learn about plants, and find moments of peace and reflection. Yet, while their visual beauty and ecological importance are widely recognised, the sounds of these environments are often overlooked. This project explores how the soundscapes of botanical gardens can play a restorative role for both individuals and communities, while also supporting biodiversity, inclusivity, and conservation goals.
The field work will take place at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (NBGW). The project will examine how natural and human sounds, their voices and stories, interact within the Garden, and how these soundscapes influence people’s feelings of calm, connection, identity, and well-being. It will also explore how thoughtful sound design can make the Garden more inclusive and welcoming to all visitors.
The study asks four key questions:
- How can soundscapes in botanical gardens be designed or enhanced to foster individual and community well-being?
- What are the ecological and psychological effects of sound in green spaces?
- How can the new Environment (Air Quality and Soundscape) (Wales) Act be applied to manage sound within conservation areas?
- How can soundscapes help engage underrepresented groups—such as Welsh-speaking communities, neurodiverse visitors, or those with visual impairments—with the natural world?
This project is innovative because it bridges three fields rarely combined: soundscape research, conservation, and public health. It treats sound not just as something to be measured, but as an active part of the environment that shapes how people experience and value nature. By listening carefully to the Garden, the project aims to reveal how sound can become a tool for conservation and community engagement.

Ynghylch y prosiect
Mae gerddi botaneg yn llefydd y daw pobl iddynt er mwyn ymwneud â byd natur, dysgu am blanhigion, myfyrio a chanfod tangnefedd. Fodd bynnag, er bod eu prydferthwch gweledol a’u pwysigrwydd amgylcheddol yn bur hysbys, mae seiniau’r amgylchfyd sydd yno yn aml yn mynd yn angof: crensian y dail, cân yr adar, bwrlwm y dyfroedd, a lleisiau pobl. Archwilia’r prosiect hwn sut y gall seinweddau gerddi botaneg fod yn llesol i unigolion a chymunedau, gan hefyd gefnogi amcanion bioamrywiaeth, cynhwysiant, a chadwraeth.
Bydd y gwaith maes yn digwydd yng Ngardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol Cymru (GFGC). Archwilia’r prosiect sut y mae seiniau naturiol a dynol, eu lleisiau a’u hanesion, yn ymwneud â’i gilydd o fewn yr Ardd, a sut y mae’r seinweddau hyn yn dylanwadu ar ymdeimlad ymwelwyr o dawelwch meddwl, perthyn, hunaniaeth, a llesiant. Bydd hefyd yn archwilio sut y gall dylunio sain ystyriol wneud yr Ardd yn fwy cynhwysol a chroesawgar i bob ymwelydd.
Mae’r astudiaeth yn gofyn pedwar cwestiwn allweddol:
- Sut y gellir dylunio neu ehangu seinweddau mewn gerddi botaneg i feithrin llesiant yr unigolyn a llesiant cymunedol?
- Beth yw effeithiau amgylcheddol a seicolegol sain mewn safleoedd gwyrdd?
- Sut y gellir defnyddio Deddf yr Amgylchedd (Ansawdd Aer a Seinweddau) (Cymru) 2024 i reoli sain mewn meysydd cadwraeth?
- Sut y gall seinweddau helpu ymgysylltu â byd natur ymysg grwpiau heb gynrychiolaeth ddigonol megis cymunedau Cymraeg, ymwelwyr niwroamrywiol, neu rai sydd ag amhariad ar y golwg?
Dyma brosiect arloesol gan ei fod yn pontio tri maes nas cyfunir yn aml: ymchwil seinweddau, cadwraeth, a iechyd y cyhoedd. Mae’n ymdrin â sain y tu hwnt i rywbeth i’w fesur yn unig, fel rhan weithredol o’r amgylchedd sy’n llunio sut y mae pobl yn profi a gwerthfawrogi byd natur. Trwy wrando’n astud ar yr Ardd, gobaith y prosiect yw datgelu sut y gall sain droi’n offeryn cadwraeth ac ymgysylltu cymunedol.
Ynghylch yr Adran
Cartref yr ysgoloriaeth hon yw’r UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, rhan o The Bartlett, sef Cyfadran yr Amgylchedd Adeiledig UCL. Bydd y myfyriwr yn ymuno â chymuned ymchwil fywiog, a bydd yn rhan o Thema Acwsteg a Astudiaethau Seinweddau’r brifysgol, gan fuddio o gefnogaeth gan gymheiriaid, cyfarfodydd labordy cyson, a mentora. Bydd hefyd yn buddio o raglen diwtora ôl-raddedig yr Adran, gweithdai Ysgol Ddoethur UCL, a gwasanaethau llesiant ymchwilwyr. Yn GFGC, bydd y myfyriwr yn rhan o dimau gwyddonol ac ymgysylltu cymunedol, gan dderbyn profiadau ym meysydd cadwraeth gymhwysol a rhaglennu cymunedol.
Mae’r Bartlett ar frig y rhestrau am astudiaethau Pensaernïaeth a’r Amgylchedd Adeiledig yn rhyngwladol (QS World University Rankings 2025). Yn yr asesiad ymchwil cenedlaethol diweddaraf (REF 2021), y Bartlett oedd rhif #1 am Rym Ymchwil ym maes astudio’r amgylchedd adeiledig yn y DG, gyda 91% o ymchwil y gyfadran yn ‘Arwain y Byd’ a’n ‘Rhyngwladol Rhagorol’.
Manyleb y person

Yn ddelfrydol, byddai gan ymgeiswyr gymhwyster lefel cwrs meistr neu’r gallu i ddangos profiad cyfwerth mewn sefyllfa a ddisgwyliai dealltwriaeth o a myfyrio beirniadol ar bynciau perthnasol, megis astudiaethau sain a seinweddau. Mae’r disgyblaethau addas eraill yn hyblyg ond gallant gynnwys seicoleg amgylcheddol, gwyddorau cymdeithasol, daearyddiaeth, dyniaethau digidol, rheoli treftadaeth (anghyffwrdd), peirianneg sain.
Rhaid i’r ymgeisydd fod yn barod i dreulio amser yn gweithio yn UCL a GFGC yn y cnawd ac ar-lein, a chânt eu hannog i ymwneud a digwyddiadau a gweithgareddau datblygu proffesiynol a drefnir ar gyfer y fintai ehangach o fyfyrwyr PDdG ar draws y DG.

Gofynion Saesneg sylfaenol y PhD hwn yw: Lefel 2.
Mae gafael ar yr iaith Gymraeg yn ddymunol, ond caiff y myfyriwr hefyd gyfle i ddatblygu sgiliau iaith priodol. Pennir y rhaglen fwyaf addas ar y cyd gyda’r ail oruchwyliwr, boed yn gwrs i ddechreuwyr (e.e. Cwrs Mynediad rhaglen Dysgu Cymraeg) neu’n gwrs Cymraeg proffesiynol (e.e. Tystysgrif Sgiliau Iaith y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol).
