As part of UCL’s bicentenary celebrations, the Bartlett has contributed to two of the new books published for UCL200, tracing two centuries of ground-breaking discoveries and architectural history.
Survey of London documents UCL’s historic Bloomsbury campus
Survey of London is a renowned series of volumes running from the 1890s to document the buildings of London and has been part of UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture since 2013.
Published by UCL Press, University College London: The Bloomsbury Campus represents the 19th monograph in the Survey of London series and the first comprehensive account of UCL’s architectural history.
This milestone volume edited by the Bartlett School of Architecture’s Colin Thom, Director of the Survey of London, and Dr Amy Spencer, Research Fellow, traces 200 years of UCL’s architectural evolution – from the iconic neoclassical Wilkins Building to contemporary high-performance structures that shape Bloomsbury today.
Bartlett contributions in UCL at 200: Two Centuries of Insight and Impact
The special commemorative volume, UCL at 200: Two Centuries of Breakthroughs, features contributions across UCL’s 11 faculties, including multiple research projects led by Bartlett academics addressing critical social and urban challenges.
These include:
- The Lancet Countdown, by Dr Marina Romanello, Professor Anthony Costello, Professor Hugh Montgomery and Professor Ian Hamilton (Vice Dean of Research at the Bartlett and the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources), highlighting the global research initiative that tracks the evolving connections between climate change and health.
- The vitality of London’s LGBTQ+ venues, by Professor Ben Campkin (the Bartlett School of Architecture and UCL Urban Laboratory) and Dr Lo Marshall, examining the importance of queer spaces in sustaining inclusive urban life.
- From ‘place-making’ to ‘making place’, by Professor Clare Melhuish (UCL Urban Laboratory), exploring how universities can support community-led regeneration through initiatives such as the UCL Urban Room at UCL East.
- Inclusive crisis recovery, by Professor Lauren Andres and Dr Lucy Natarajan (the Bartlett School of Planning), highlighting approaches to equitable urban recovery following disruption and crisis.
The publication’s cover also features a striking image by Matthew Poon, a doctoral researcher at the Bartlett School of Architecture (Architectural Design MPhil/PhD). Selected through a highly competitive student photography competition, his photograph captures UCL in wavelengths beyond the visible spectrum, offering a distinctive and innovative visual interpretation of the university’s identity.
