Professor Matthew Carmona, Professor of Planning and Urban Design at The Bartlett School of Planning, has been appointed Specialist Advisor to the House of Lords Built Environment Committee.
The committee is conducting a rapid inquiry, to conclude early in the new year, examining how to create sustainable, high-quality communities as part of the national New Towns programme. Earlier this year, the Government-backed New Towns Taskforce identified 12 potential locations for new towns across England. Over the coming months, the House of Lords will gather evidence and hold hearings to explore what form these and other proposals should take.
In his advisory role, Professor Carmona will help guide the committee’s work and the development of recommendations for Government.
He said, “For the first time in generations, new towns are being seriously pursued by a UK Government. Designing them well will determine their long-term success. This inquiry is an important opportunity to ensure that happens, and I am delighted to be helping to secure that.”
