Barcelona Announced as Location of Sixth FABRICATE Conference in 2027

Co-founded and launched by Professor Bob Sheil at The UCL Bartlett School of Architecture in 2011, FABRICATE has evolved as a global forum for showcasing pioneering academic and practice-based research in design and fabrication with significant influence in the sector. The conference series and accompanying publications have documented 160 built projects from over 30 countries, all of which are archived on fabricate.org.

Following the inaugural event at BSA in 2011, FABRICATE was held in Zurich 2014, Stuttgart 2017, Online in 2020, and in Copenhagen 2024. Each of these five FABRICATE events have focused on themes that have emerged in the field across two decades, including sustainability, resilience, construction and manufacturing processes, material science, and assembly.

Professor Sheil has co-edited every edition alongside Bartlett alumna Marilena Skavara and the dedicated local Chairs for each event. He is currently UCL lead in partnership with an international consortium to accelerate digital transformation processes within the AEC sector, and has been Bartlett Professor of Architecture and Design through Production since 2011.

The sixth event will be taking place in Barcelona, co-chaired by Dr Areti Markopoulou and Xavier De Kestelier and hosted by the Institute for Advanced Architecture Barcelona (IAAC). Their vision for FABRICATE 2027 is to rethink extractive models of architectural production, to listen to and learn from local contexts and to empower broader communities of designers, makers and builders around the world.

The extended lead-in time of FABRICATE 2027 offers researchers and practitioners the opportunity to accumulate key documentation of projects under construction, gathering data and evidence that is often otherwise concealed after completion.
