Josep Miàs, Professor of Architectural Practice at The Bartlett and founder of MiAS Architects, has been appointed as an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and will be elevated to the AIA College of Fellows.
The prestigious fellowship recognises architects who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession and have made significant contributions to the practice of architecture on a global scale.
Founded in 2000, MiAS Architects is recognised internationally for its innovative and experimental approach, combining sustainable technology, innovative manufacturing and cutting-edge construction practices.
MiAS Architects has received numerous international awards and recognition. In 2022, the firm was honoured by the Government of Catalonia and the City Council of Barcelona with a monographic exhibition at the Museum of Design and Architecture of Barcelona, which was the first ever exhibition in the museum dedicated to an actively practicing architecture firm. MiAS Architects have also won the Architizer Building of the World Award (2013), the Archdaily Building of the Year Award (2011), the Catalonia Construction Award (2009) and the AJAC Best Young Catalan Architect Award (2004).
Commenting on the recognition, Josep said:
It is an honour to receive this award from the AIA, both for the organisation itself and for the individuals who have been recognised previously. They are all influential figures in architecture, not only from a professional standpoint but also academically. For the studio and personally, [the award] represents recognition of the professional and academic work, highlighting the value of research efforts in both the studio and educational contexts. Ultimately, it entails assuming a higher degree of responsibility and commitment to architecture and to society.
The AIA will celebrate new fellows at the AIA Awards Gala on 07 June 2024 at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C.
