The Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) hosted a celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science (also known as EPB). The event featured talks from Prof Paul Longley (UCL Geography) and Prof Philip Steadman (The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources), among other renowned spatial science experts.
EPB is part of the Environment and Planning series of journals established in 1969 by Adam Gelbtuch (1921–2014) and John Ashby (1928–1999). It was founded in 1974 to be the leading journal publishing cutting-edge research in analytical methods for urban planning and design. The journal focuses on smart cities, urban analytics, GIS, urban simulation models, visualisation, computation and formal design-based methods applicable to structures in cities and regions.
EPB has grown dramatically from two issues a year in 1974 to nine issues a year in 2023. This celebration reflects the fact that the journal, its editors and its readers are keenly aware of developments in the field. It is a great opportunity to examine how the field has changed over five decades, and the change to come in future years.
The 50th anniversary issue of the journal includes commentaries from Linda See, Andrew Crooks, Levi J Wolf, Dani Arribas-Bel, Richard Harris, Paul A. Longley, David O’Sullivan, Philip Steadman, Chris Webster, Clio Andris, Clémentine Cottineau, Dafna Fisher-Gewirtzman, Ying Long, Enjia Zhang, John Peponis, Somwrita Sarkar, George Stiny and Anthony G.O. Yeh.
