Students attend the UCL Sustainable Building Design for Climate Change summer school

The UCL Sustainable Building Design for Climate Change summer school, run by Dr Sam Stamp (Lecturer, UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering), was attended by a total of 30 students attended across 3 days. The summer school was taught by UCL staff and students, covering a broad range of topics covered including climate change, architectural theory and passive solar design. This year, the event was able to run in-person instead of online, and the students welcomed the opportunity to meet with people with similar interests and ambitions.

The summer school is part of UCL’s Widening Participation activities, which aims to ensure that all applicants have an equal chance of entering UCL, regardless of background, ethnicity, age or disability. Students who attend the summer school must meet at least one of a number of eligibility criteria. The summer school began when Dr Stamp noticed a variation in how well UCL degree applicants had been prepared for interview by their schools:

The event comes shortly after BSEER announced its new undergraduate degree, Sustainable Built Environments, Energy and Resources BSc and MEng, which will launch in 2023. Both courses recognise and respond to the important role UCL will have to play in giving the professionals of tomorrow the expertise they need to manage the developing climate and biodiversity crisis.
