CIBSE Happold Brilliant Award presented to University College London

The MEng Engineering and Architectural Design is a four-year programme which has been jointly designed and delivered by The Bartlett School of Architecture (BSA), UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE) and UCL Civil Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) in close collaboration with industry leaders to combine the major disciplines of architecture and engineering of the built environment and prepare graduates to be future industry leaders. Students on this programme enjoy unrivalled spaces to work in, including new facilities at Here East, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, as well as centrally located departments in Bloomsbury.

The Happold Brilliant annual award was introduced by CIBSE to recognise excellence in the teaching of building services engineering. The award was the idea of the late Professor Sir Edmund "Ted" Happold, and is sponsored by the Happold Trust. Ted Happold believed deeply in promoting the excellence of teaching building services engineering, and the contribution that a quality education can bring to the work, values and ideas of the engineers of the future. This year, the Happold Brilliant Award was presented to the Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering at the CIBSE President’s Award Dinner in October 2022.

The CIBSE panel was "impressed by the high quality of graduates produced by the university. They felt that the project topics studied by the students cover a wide range of building services areas and include sustainability and renewable systems. The panel thought that UCL has excellent links with the industry through the advisory panel and UCL had very impressive facilities including its Centre of Excellence (RAEng Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design) and laboratories. The students are supported by experienced, helpful, and dedicated staff throughout their course."

Led by Professor Oliveira of Strathclyde University, the core MEng Development and Delivery Team (2014-2021): Olsen (BSA), Malki-Epshtein (CEGE), Mumovic (IEDE) and D'Ayala (CEGE) published a paper in Springer's International Journal of Technology and Design Education on "Transcending disciplines in architecture, structural and building services engineering: a new multidisciplinary educational approach." reflecting upon the mechanisms that enabled development of curricular approaches to multidisciplinary architecture/engineering higher education embedded in MEng Engineering and Architectural Design. CIBSE accreditation advisor for the programme was Honorary Professor Tim Dwyer.

Ted Happold was founding partner of multi-disciplinary consulting engineers Buro Happold and was responsible for establishing environmental and building services engineering within the practice. An Honorary Fellow of CIBSE, Ted was an enthusiastic, long-term supporter of the Institution.
