The awards celebrate women’s global contribution to the architecture profession, promote role models for young women in practice and encourage respect, diversity and equality in architecture.

Nerea is one of four architects shortlisted for the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture. The Prize focuses on architects under 45, and considers practitioners working locally and internationally on projects spread across residential, educational, civic and cultural sectors. The winner will be announced on 10 March.

Nerea completed her PhD in 2018 at The Bartlett; her research explored architecture as a tool for young children learning in Eastern Africa’s protracted refugee encampments, resulting in the design and construction of Mwito, a pre-primary school in Rwanda.

Creative Assemblages

Nerea is an architect and researcher with extensive experience in sustainable, educational and health projects in East Africa. She taught architecture and urbanism at the University of Rwanda and co-founded ASA studio based in Kigali. She currently leads the interdisciplinary design practice and think-tank Creative Assemblages based in Kampala, and is a guest professor at the UIC in Barcelona.

UCL Press will shortly publish Nerea’s new book based on her research, as part of the series ‘Design Research in Architecture’.
