The new EPSRC CDT in Energy Resilience and the Built Environment (ERBE) will train at least 68 PhD graduates to understand the systemic, radical, multi- and inter-disciplinary challenges we face, and equip them with the leadership credentials to effect change.

Students will be immersed in world-leading research environments at UCL and Loughborough University, collaborating with the Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy in Ireland. They will work with partners in industry, government and NGOs to deliver insights that are directly relevant to the challenges this sector faces. ERBE students will attain a depth of understanding only possible as cohorts work and learn together.
The ERBE Centre for doctoral training mirrors the ground-breaking ethos of the UCL Energy Institute: to understand and analyse energy demand in a multidisciplinary framing, and embed buildings into the wider energy system.

ERBE Director Professor Bob Lowe confirmed that the EPSRC Centre in Energy Resilience and the Built Environment (ERBE) will be an opportunity to train talented and enthusiastic students in the research and workplace skills needed to take leading roles in the transformation of UK and Irish energy systems.
Students will undertake ambitious research projects supported by leading researchers within the UCL Energy Institute, the UCL Institute for Environmental Design Engineering, Loughborough’s School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering and the Republic of Ireland’s top energy research centre, MaREI.
One of the key features of ERBE is the collaborations we are building with industry and government. These will bring new insights and opportunities to address relevant and high impact issues; I am looking forward to getting started.
