UCL’s newly established Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose is seeking a Research Associate in the area of Health Innovation and Policy Engagement to work on one of the institute’s core research themes: Rethinking Health Innovation. Based on a broader concept of public value, the theme develops an alternative, mission-oriented approach to medical research. The research associate will work closely with the institute’s Director Professor Mariana Mazzucato, in the context of the Open Society Foundations funded project that aims to explore and Rethink the Economics of Medical Innovation based on a broader conception of public value and develop an alternative, mission-oriented approach to medical research.
The position presents an excellent opportunity to contribute to an innovative field of research, and publish and present research findings, participate in the policy debate and contribute to winning research funding.
Situated in a globally top university, the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose is already demonstrating impact and influence, including:
- Launching the Mission-Oriented Innovation Network (MOIN) bringing together leading global policy-making institutions to share their challenges and opportunities in creating and shaping markets, not only fix them.
- Convening the Commission for Mission-Oriented Innovation and Industrial Strategy (MOIIS) to address the 4 key challenges in the UK’s Industrial Strategy, namely AI & Data Economy, Clean Growth, Future of Mobility and the Ageing Society.
- Professor Mariana Mazzucato’s high level report for the European Commission on Mission Oriented Research and Innovation.
- Collaborating with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network around innovation and technology road-mapping for the Sustainable Development Goals.
The ideal candidate for the post is an analytical person with a keen and established interest in multi-disciplinary and policy-relevant research in health innovation and have a good grasp of theoretical economics of public goods and public value.
Individuals with experience in innovation policy and health care, or similar areas, are especially encouraged to apply. However, we are also very keen to speak to analytical economists, engineers, social scientists, and natural scientists who wish to develop and apply their skills to a new area of research.
The key attributes for this role are excellent writing skills for both research and policy, strong and engaging presentation and communication skills, and proven ability with data analysis and related evidence-based methods.
