22 Gordon Street wins AJ Retrofit Award

22 Gordon Street has won Higher and Further Education Building of the Year at the AJ Retrofit Awards 2017
The home of the Bartlett School of Architecture, designed by Hawkins\Brown, underwent a ‘deep retrofit’ in 2014 and was opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, Chancellor of the University of London, in December 2016.
The Jury commented that the project was “a bold and intelligent overhaul” with “memorable and functional interior spaces [such as] the main stair, new social spaces and robust and flexible student areas, which allow for further transformation as needs change.”
The AJ Retrofit Awards are organised by the Architects’ Journal, and recognise UK regeneration and refurbishment projects in a vitally ever-growing sector, celebrating buildings that prolong and improve the life of the built environment.
Professor Alan Penn, Dean of The Bartlett, said “We are delighted to receive this award for the transformation of our Bloomsbury home through a successful collaboration with Hawkins\Brown. Retrofit was faster, less costly and saved embodied energy. It keeps memory alive and creates idiosyncrasy which are immensely valuable for The Bartlett.”
This award follows previous victories of a RIBA London Award and a New London Architecture Award for Education, as well as being shortlisted in the AJ100 Awards and Building Awards.
