  • IIPP joins forces with Ind+I to launch competition to develop new notions of ‘public value’

The UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) is delighted to announce a new research grants competition for students in PhD programs of Catalan Universities or Catalans PhD students in universities of other regions and countries, aimed at exploring how new concepts of public value and public purpose can help tackle the big global challenges of today.

Eight awards of 1,500 Euros will be available, aimed at exploring the notion of public value and public purpose in the context of innovation and the sustainable cities agenda. There will be two awards in each of the four categories: sustainable cities; innovation and industry; metropolitan innovation policies; and green industry for sustainable growth.

The competition is being run jointly by IIPP and Viladecans City Council, which runs the annual Ind+I Science conference on innovation and industry, connecting scientific thinking about global technology and innovation with the real needs of businesses and the societal and environmental challenges faced by society.

Professor Mariana Mazzucato, Director of IIPP, comments:

‘Viladecans City Council has led the way in developing innovative, collaborative strategies to tackle societal and environmental challenges. The Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose is delighted to be launching this exciting collaboration, and developing a framework for future cooperation and coordination’.

Candidates must be currently enrolled (at the time of submission) in a Catalan university PhD program or, in case of students residing in Catalonia, also in any Spanish or abroad university PhD programmes.

Awarded candidates will be invited to present their essays at a symposium organized in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area by IND+I and IIPP, where there will also be the opportunity to discuss the essays with senior researchers and debate with high level government representatives and policymakers.

The deadline for applications is 3 November 2017. For full details of criteria and how to apply see IND+I Science call for proposal research grant (270K PDF).
