  • C&PM alumnus wins APM’s prestigious project management award

An alumnus of C&PM has won Project Professional of the Year at the APM Project Management Awards 2016.

Spencer Hobbs, who studied MSc Project and Enterprise Management and is now a Project Manager at Network Rail, collected the prestigious award at the London Hilton Park Lane on Monday evening.

Spencer’s award follows the receipt of the same award by C&PM PhD candidate Simon Addyman in 2013.

Commenting on these awards, Professor Stephen Pryke, Programme Leader of MSc Project and Enterprise Management, said “I am delighted to hear that Spencer has won this award. This, and the award in 2013, is a testament to the design of the programmes the School offers. It validates the prominence of UCL and C&PM in the field of project management.”

Supervised by Professor Hedley Smyth, Spencer wrote his dissertation on how emotional intelligence affects project teams. He was appointed project manager of the Swindon Area Signalling Renewal (SASR) in 2014.

Receiving the award, Spencer said “I am shocked to win because I was up against three other experienced and high quality project professionals in the finals. I also view the award as recognition of all the excellent collaborative working by my Network Rail team and the various supply chain organisations involved in delivering the SASR project.”

In an interview shortly before his final, forty-minute presentation to the APM judging panel in September, he said he was up against “tough competition”, including project managers from companies such as BAE Systems.
