Giacomo Mastantuono, BSc Project Management for Construction graduate, has won the CIOB International Innovation & Research Award for Undergraduate Dissertation.

Giacomo’s dissertation, Life Cycle Costing - Have We Got It Right?, analyses the effectiveness of life cycle costing as a decision-making tool at the design stage of a construction project, and includes an in-depth literature review focused on the theoretical benefits of life cycle costing and the obstacles to its practical application.

The judge commented, ‘The depth of knowledge shown in this dissertation is highly exceptional at the undergraduate level. The research questions are carefully justified and highly relevant. Based on a set of semi-structured interviews with senior practitioners in the industry, the dissertation offers a mature analysis of the realised qualitative data. It is exemplary in its presentation and sets a standard to which all undergraduates should aspire.’

The award recognises recent graduates who are already making a valuable contribution and could lead on innovation in the future, and is another well-deserved academic achievement for Giacono, who, graduated with first class honours and successfully secured a place on the University of Cambridge MPhil in Real Estate programme.
