The timber fishing hut saw off competition from Flanagan Lawrence’s Acoustic Shells, a barn conversion by Liddicoat & Goldhill, BBM Sustainable Design’s house made from waste, a Passivhaus by Prewett Bizley Architects, a garden studio by Stonewood Design and a house by Edgley Design.

The ‘66m² lakeside structure was designed as a retreat for fishermen. Slatted panels allow the building to be closed up in winter and opened up in spring, while timber-framed glass screens slide away, changing the hut from solid to transparent.

McLaughlin was also shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize with his Darbishire Place housing scheme. Professor Bob Sheil, Director of The Bartlett School of Architecture, comments:

'Níall McLaughlin Architects’ beautifully crafted fishing hut is typical of the practice led by our Professor of Architectural Practice. Niall has taught at The Bartlett School of Architecture for over 20 years and many of his staff who's authorship can be read in the work have been students at the school, in particular from Unit 17, which Níall runs alongside former Stephen Lawrence Prize Winner Yeoryia Manolopoulou of AY Architects, and Michiko Sumi. Niall McLaughlin Architects were also and again shortlisted for the Stirling Prize, which was won by our alumni AHMM.'

The Stephen Lawrence Prize awards the best examples of projects that have a construction budget of less than £1million and was set up in the memory of Stephen Lawrence.
