Níall McLaughlin director of Níall McLaughlin Architects has been appointed Professor of Architectural Practice at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, effective from the start of the new academic year 2015-16.

In this new role, McLaughlin will continue to teach on MArch Architecture Unit 17 with Michiko Sumi and Yeoryia Manolopoulou, as well as continuing to develop his design research folio in building design, material behaviours, building use, cultural meaning and user experience.

Having taught at The Bartlett School of Architecture for 25 years, Professor McLaughlin says of the appointment:

‘I am delighted and honoured to accept this new appointment as Professor of Architectural Practice. Teaching at the school has played a significant part in my development both as a practitioner and a teacher. The culture of the school offers constant challenges and support to my ideas; and the exchanges with students and teaching colleagues have been critical in forming me.

'I hope to use this new position to find new ways to support practitioners wishing to engage with a teaching environment. We already have many brilliant young architects teaching at the school and I would like to offer them my support. In addition I would like to reach out to the wider world of reflective practice and encourage interesting architects to engage with the school.

'Furthermore, the role will facilitate the development of my own research opening up opportunities for cross-disciplinary research with other departments at UCL. This will in turn feed into buildings we are making. I relish this opportunity.’

Níall McLaughlin received his architectural qualifications from University College Dublin in 1984. He worked for Scott Tallon Walker in Dublin and London between 1984 and 1989. He founded Níall McLaughlin Architects in London in 1990, with the overriding ethos to make high quality modern buildings with a special emphasis on materials and detail. McLaughlin was crowned winner of Young British Architect of the Year in 1998, was one of the BBC Rising Stars in 2001 and his work represented Britain in a US exhibition, Gritty Brits, at the Carnegie Mellon Museum in 2007. His designs have won many awards in the UK, Ireland and the US, including: RIAI Best Building in the Landscape, the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Award for the Best Building under £1million, and he has been shortlisted twice (in 2013 and 2015) for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize.
