The Bartlett School of Planning’s Professor Nick Gallent has been elected to the very prestigious Academy of Social Sciences in recognition of his contribution to the social sciences as a leading researcher in the field of UK housing planning, especially with reference to affordable housing and rural communities.
Nick is one of four prominent planners newly elected as Fellows of the Academy. Commenting on the announcement of the new fellows, Janet Askew, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute, said: “The election of these four distinguished RTPI members to the Academy of Social Sciences demonstrates the high regard that they are held in by their peers, and the key role that planning plays within the social sciences. The Academy plays an invaluable role in raising the profile of the social sciences and we are therefore delighted that Nick, Genie, Kelvin and Ya Ping have joined it to foster further multidisciplinary exchange and ensure high quality in planning research and professional development”.

The Academy of Social Sciences
The Academy of Social Sciences is the national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences. Its mission is to promote social science in the United Kingdom for the public benefit. The Academy is composed of around 1000 individual Fellows, 41 Learned Societies, and a number of affiliate members, together representing nearly 90,000 social scientists. Fellows are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors. Most of the Learned Societies in the social sciences in the UK are represented within the Academy.
The Academy’s mission is to promote social sciences in the United Kingdom for the public benefit, and is composed of Individual Academicians and Learned Societies. Academicians are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors. The Academy responds to Government and other consultations on behalf of the social science community, organises meetings about social science and seminars on topics that span social science disciplines, and sponsors a number of schemes that promote social science and enhance its value to society.
