  • SmallWorld Urbanism Thrives Under the Impetus of Bartlett Students

SmallWorld Urbanism is a company created by former and current students of Bartlett School of Planning, which has been slowly building up in to a community focused planning, design and engagement organisation working on a range of projects, including the establishment of a community centre in Brixton.

Granville Market Space

Over the past few weeks SmallWorld Urbanism have been working hard on several major new projects. The first, launching on 9th May is a new market for Brixton - Granville Market Space. To achieve this they have been working in partnership with Brixton Night Market to transform an underused, Council-owned carpark in to a new weekend hot food and arts & crafts market with live music and community workshops.

Visit the Granville Market Space Facebook page.

SmallWorld Urbanism has also linked up with the Urban Design Group affiliated STREET Network, a collective of early career planners and designers, to come up with a flexible, affordable and above all deliverable design for the market space. This has been beneficial for both parties as SmallWorld Urbanism has secured a free professional standard design and STREET Network have got the rare opportunity at this stage in their careers to come up with a design and see it through to delivery.

Mosaic Rooms Garden Installation

The company’s other major current project is a commission for a garden installation at the Mosaic Rooms gallery in Kensington to accompany their forthcoming exhibition, The Garden State. The exhibition and installation form part of the London Festival of Architecture, the Chelsea Fringe and the Open Garden Squares Weekend. They will also be running workshops focussing on permaculture and up-cycling throughout the course of the exhibition.

The Garden State exhibition launches to the public on the 14th May.

Visit the gallery’s exhibition website here.

Looking Forward

The future looks promising for the company, as they have recently been approached by a major housing association to discuss the potential for a community engagement project covering a number of their estates across North London and are in discussions with a number of other organisation to explore the potential to take on a number of local authority contracts for the upkeep and revitalisation of small public spaces.
